Looking for forest carbon projects in Europe? Start here
If you’re looking to source forest carbon credits in Europe, you’ll know the list of project developers is pretty short, especially compared to regions like North or South America. I’ve pulled together a list of the main ones we’ve seen actively developing projects across Europe, focusing on afforestation, reforestation, and improved forest management.
To keep it simple, I’ve grouped them into two buckets: those focused primarily on Europe and larger developers with global portfolios that include European projects.
Check out the table below for a quick snapshot, or read on for the details.
Developer | Regions covered | Project types | Standard |
---|---|---|---|
Arbonics | Baltic countries, Sweden, Finland, and expanding in Europe | Afforestation and improved forest management | Verra’s VM0047 |
Tree.ly | Central Europe (Switzerland and Austria) | Improved forest management and conservation | ISO 14064-2 verified by TÜV |
Pina Earth | Germany | Improved forest management | ISO 14064-2 verified by TÜV |
Zulu Ecosystems | United Kingdom (England & Scotland focus) | Woodland and peatland restoration | Woodland Carbon Code (UK) |
Ocell | Germany | Improved forest management | German Forest Climate Standard (WKS) |
Ecobase | Pan-Europe | Afforestation and improved forest management | AR-ACM0003 and VM0003 |
Land Life | Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal) and global (North America, Australia) | Reforestation | Verra’s AR-ACM0003 |
Reforest Action | Pan-Europe and global (five continents) | Reforestation and afforestation | Label Bas-Carbone (France), PEFC |
South Pole | Western Europe (France) and global (six continents) | Reforestation | Label Bas-Carbone (France) |
Arbonics
Regions covered: Baltic countries, Sweden, Finland, and expanding in Europe
Project types: Afforestation and improved forest management
Standard: Verra’s VM0047
Arbonics delivers high-integrity European forest carbon removals, restoring abandoned and under-utilised land into thriving forests. Our projects are among the few in Europe under Verra’s VM00047 — a strong fit if you’re looking for data-backed credits with a focus on quality and additionality.

Tree.ly
Regions covered: Central Europe (Switzerland and Austria)
Project types: Improved forest management and conservation
Standard: ISO 14064-2 verified by TÜV
Tree.ly offers locally verified credits from projects focused on municipal and smallholder forests. It’s a potential fit if you’re looking to branch out from large-scale portfolios, especially if you're working in Central Europe or need credits that align with your regional footprint.
Pina Earth
Regions covered: Germany
Project types: Improved forest management
Standard: ISO 14064-2 verified by TÜV
Pina Earth offers early-stage credits from managed forests in Germany. Having pioneered the country’s first standard for forest adaptation projects, it turns vulnerable pine and spruce stands into more climate-resilient ecosystems through a mix of replanting and longer harvest cycles.
Zulu Ecosystems
Regions covered: United Kingdom (England & Scotland focus)
Project types: Woodland and peatland restoration
Standard: Woodland Carbon Code (UK)
Zulu Ecosystems works on restoring degraded or low-quality land in the UK. It’s a solid option for buyers focused on Woodland Carbon Code compliance and looking for UK-based removals with clear co-benefits like improved biodiversity and flood prevention.
Ocell
Regions covered: Germany
Project types: Improved forest management
Standard: German Forest Climate Standard (WKS)
Ocell’s two pilot projects in Germany focus on introducing a mix of climate-resilient tree species to the local ecosystem. It’s still early in its certification journey, but uses technology like LiDAR to track growth. A potential fit for buyers interested in early-stage projects with a tech focus.
Ecobase
Regions covered: Pan-Europe
Project types: Afforestation and improved forest management
Standard: Verra’s AR-ACM0003 and VM0003
Ecobase offers a way to access nature-based removals across Europe through a single project. It’s designed for buyers prioritising broad regional coverage and large volumes under a unified structure.
Global developers with projects in Europe
Land Life
Regions covered: Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal) and global (North America, Australia)
Project Types: Reforestation
Standard: Verra’s AR-ACM0003
Land Life runs large-scale projects that focus on areas hit by wildfires, pests, or long-term land degradation. It works with local partners to bring back native species, restore ecosystems, and boost climate resilience over time.
Reforest Action
Regions covered: Pan-Europe and global (five continents)
Project types: Reforestation and afforestation
Standard: Label Bas-Carbone (LBC – France’s national standard), Programme for the endorsement of the Forest Certification (PEFC)
Reforest Action works on tree-planting and agroforestry projects with local landowners and NGOs across Europe. Useful for buyers after regional diversity, with pricing supported by an aggregation model.
South Pole
Regions covered: Western Europe (France) and global (six continents)
Project types: Reforestation
Standard: Label Bas-Carbone (LBC – France’s national standard)
South Pole works in parts of France hit hard by pests, disease, and fire. Because it works across both tropical and temperate regions, it can be a handy option for buyers looking to spread credits across multiple geographies.
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list—there are lots of other project developers out there, especially if you’re looking country by country. For example, the Woodland Carbon Code has a whole registry of developers working across the UK.
If you’re focused on a specific country, it’s worth checking whether there’s a recognised national standard (like the WCC in the UK or Label Bas-Carbone in France). If there is, looking for developers certified under it is usually the best way to get a sense of who’s doing credible work in that region. That said, many countries don’t have a national standard, so developers there often use international ones like Verra instead (you can search on its registry here).
For buyers focused on quality, our project is one of the few in Europe that follows Verra’s VM0047 methodology. Get in touch if you’d like to explore how our removals could fit into your portfolio.
Arbonics connects landowners and credit buyers at scale to remove carbon and protect biodiversity through data-backed forestry solutions.
Our leading technology finds the best strategies to maximise carbon removal, allowing us to offer two solutions to landowners: Afforestation for planting new forests, and Impact Forestry for improved forest management.
We provide credit buyers with high-quality carbon credits from these projects to support your positive environmental impact. Our solutions are backed by advanced technology, deep forestry expertise, and the stringent forestry regulations of the EU.
